Jesus died. He rose again. But what happened in between?

You've likely read the Easter story to your kids. But have they ever asked:

  • Where did Jesus go after he died?

  • Why did he have to die?

Growing up in an Evangelical context, my answer would’ve been something like:

He died for our sins so we could be with him and go to heaven.

Illustrated by Diana Popescu.

More than just “my sins” - it’s a cosmic battle

The story of the Harrowing of Hades, preserved in the Great Tradition, tells of Christ’s descent into Sheol. He doesn’t just die, he breaks the gates of Hades, frees the righteous, and rises holding the keys to eternal life.

This story goes beyond the view of “Christ died for our sins” to: Christ defeated the powers of death, liberated the faithful, and inaugurated the Kingdom - all told in a mythic, yet accessible way your kids will remember and cherish.
